Update: 14 September 2017 - 1:00pm EST

Resources for Associates Recovering from Hurricane Irma

Irma had a significant impact on the state of Florida, and we understand that you and the safety and security of your family are the top priority at this time. Many of our associates are still without power, surveying the damage sustained and working through the steps and processes needed to get back to normalcy. We have collected a list of resources that will be helpful to you, and your family as we continue to rebuild and recover. All of the resources, with the exception of the EAP program, are public resources. So feel free to share them with friends and neighbors as well.

  • HELPING CHILDREN COPE
Children may cope more effectively with a disaster when they feel they understand what is happening and what they can do to help protect themselves, their family, and friends. Click HERE to view this fact sheet to see how you can help them cope.

  • OPEN SHELTERS
More than 160 shelters are open throughout Florida with a total population of more than 21,000 individuals. Over 60 special needs shelters are open with a total population of more than 10,000 individuals. Click HERE to find information on shelters in your area.

  • RELIEF RIDES
In response to Hurricane Irma, Lyft is donating $100,000 to a “Relief Rides” program helping those in need get to and from hospitals and shelters. If you are associated with a hospital, shelter, or local government, please email florida@lyft.com so that Lyft can get you access to a pre-funded account to help those in need. If you are an individual in need of a ride in Florida, please use the code HELPFLORIDA. Click HERE for more information on relief rides.

  • A GUIDE TO BEFORE, DURING, ANG AFTER A HURRICANE

  • GAS BUDDY APP
Across the state, we are experiencing longer-than-ever gas lines thanks to our friend Irma. For those traveling, it can be a challenge to find a gas station in a town you are unfamiliar with. GasBuddy can help you find the nearest gas station, search for prices, and a recently added feature will show which Florida gas stations have fuel. This app just might be your go-to resource for finding gas in your area.

  • EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Your Cigna Employee Assistance & Work/Life Support Program is available to help you and your family find a solution and restore your peace of mind. Whether you are traveling north to flee the wrath of Hurricane Irma or boarding up and staying close to home, we have compiled some resources below that you might find helpful.

  • GasBuddy App
Across the state, we are experiencing longer-than-ever gas lines thanks to our friend Irma. For those traveling, it can be a challenge to find a gas station in a town you are unfamiliar with. GasBuddy can help you find the nearest gas station, search for prices, and a recently added feature will show which Florida gas stations have fuel. This app just might be your go-to resource for finding gas in your area.

  • Waze App
Leaving town? Already on the road? Waze could make your trip a little easier. This social network for drivers shares real-time traffic and road information to save you time and gas in your travels.

  • Zello App
A free walkie-talkie app, Zello allows users to simply push a button to talk to one another as long as they are connected to a cellular or wireless network. This app spiked in downloads after the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey hit Texas.

  • WhatsApp Messenger App
A free messaging app, WhatsApp allows users to message and call family and friends using just an internet connection. Fast, simple, and secure, WhatsApp also has group chat capabilities that can connect you to multiple users at once.

  • Hurricane by American Red Cross App
This app allows users to monitor conditions in your area and throughout the storm track, find help if you need it, and let family members know you’re safe. CNN names this app as one of the top six hurricane tracking apps and Fox News named this one of five apps to get you through a natural disaster.

  • Xfinity Offers Free WiFi Hotspots State-Wide
In an effort to help residents stay connected, Comcast announced they will be opening more than 137,000 Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the state to anyone in need. These hotspots are open to anyone, not just current Xfinity customers, and the service is at no cost. To view a hotspot near you, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. These free hotspots will be in effect through September 15, 2017.

  • Cell Phone Battery Tips
It’s no secret we are all attached to our phones. Take a look at the tips below to help you preserve your battery.

Before you lose power:

Keep your phone fully charged at all times.
Ensure your portable charger and any back-up batteries are fully charged.
Fully charge your laptop so you can plug your phone into it once you lose power.
Make sure you have a car charger on hand.

After you lose power:

Turn off any push notifications.
Delete unused apps that could be taking up power.
Close and open apps.
Turn down your screen brightness.
If it is safe to access your vehicle, use your car charger.
Enable “Low Power Mode” or “Airplane Mode”
Note: When in airplane mode, you will lose the ability to communicate with another device as well as access to internet. If you forget to disable airplane mode, you may miss calls or text messages. On the iPhone, you are able to enable wifi on your phone while it's in airplane mode, but you have to do it manually.
