4 Tips for Small Business Owners Seeking Better Work-Life Balance

When you're running your own business, stepping away from the ledger and the order forms to live your life becomes increasingly difficult. However, experts agree that proper work-life balance should represent a top priority for all professionals. How do you achieve better work-life balance and still keep your business running?

1. Schedule One Hour of Personal or Family Time Every Night

Whether you take a yoga class, read a book, or chase the kids around the backyard, build in time for yourself.

If you don't schedule personal or family time outside of work, you'll never get around to it. Your business will consume all of your waking thoughts and you'll become enslaved to your to-do list. If you want to avoid that fate, schedule at least one hour of non-work time every night.

Make it an event so you feel fulfilled by the experience. Maybe you just want to take a long bath with a glass of wine and a stack of magazines. Light candles or play your favorite music to make the time feel even more luxurious. Turn off your computer and your phone so you don't feel tempted to re-engage with the business world.

2. Manage Your Finances Carefully

Your work-life balance might suffer because of financial difficulties. Avoid them to increase your fulfillment.

Nothing ruins the work-life balance more effectively than stress caused by money troubles. If you're constantly worried about keeping your business in the black, you'll lack the energy or focus to attend to matters in your private life. This can prove disastrous for your mental well-being.

If you need help getting your business back on the right track, consider applying for small business loans. Get your financial feet underneath you and focus on generating revenue instead of digging out of debt.

You can also invest in financial software or a financial advisor to help you make more practical decisions. Leverage your social and professional circles to find help when you need it. Working with a trusted community bank can supply you with a reliable team of professionals who can help you reach your small business goals.

3. Learn to Say No
Often out of fear, small business owners agree to every opportunity, partnership, and job that comes their way. However, this strategy could leave you overworked and frustrated because you never have time for the things you love outside of work.

Learn to say no when an opportunity won't provide you with the value you need to justify the time and energy you put into it. Focus instead on projects, jobs, or opportunities that excite and motivate you.

4. Set Realistic Goals
If you're constantly striving toward impossible goals, you'll feel like you've landed on an infinitely-moving treadmill. You can't get ahead because your goals remain forever beyond your reach. To avoid this, set practical, realistic goals that you can conceivably achieve.

If you determine that you can't reach a goal, modify it. Break it up into smaller, more digestible parts so you can evaluate your progress on a day-to-day or week-to-week basis. Consider setting both short- and long-term goals.

Achieving work-life balance takes effort, but it's an essential component to a thriving small business -- both for yourself and for your employees. If you're interested in applying for small business loans, check out our business lending solutions so we can discuss your needs and goals.
